Sweden is the archetypal social democratic case which defines the parameters for reformist strategies elsewhere. Much recent scholarship throws severe doubts on the possibilities of such projects. In contrast, Tsarouhas argues in a carefully constructed and well structured account that social democracy remains relevant.

A parliamentary democracy. In Sweden, general elections are held every four years. Around 7 million people are entitled to vote and thereby influence which political party will represent them in the Swedish parliament (the Riksdag), county councils and municipalities. Sweden is a parliamentary democracy, which means that all public power proceeds from the people. At the national level, the people are represented by the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) which has legislative power. The Government implements the Riksdag's decisions and draws up proposals for new laws or law amendments. When the citizens are given the opportunity to help to decide a specific matter, for example, in a referendum, this is known as direct democracy.
